This Week’s Biggest Solar Projects

Apple's Solar FacilityTwo major companies are taking advantage of solar energy as major projects are being unveiled this week. Take a look at the week’s largest solar power projects:

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona just celebrated a whopping 16,000 solar panel installation in their massive airport. Because Phoenix benefits from roughly 310 days of sunshine per year, the Arizona solar project is sure to remain efficient and effective. The solar panels, owned by SunPower Corp. (San Jose) are expected to meet as much as 51 percent of the entire airport’s energy needs. Here are some other facts about this giant solar installation:

  • The new solar panel installation will save the airport as much as $4.7 million over the next 20 years.
  • A solar installation of this size will typically generate enough power for 250 homes.
  • The solar energy generated from this project could offset more than 5,500 tons of carbon dioxide typically produced at an airport of this size. That’s the equivalent of taking 19,800 cars off the road in Arizona!

The technological giant, Apple is planning a solar energy project in their North Carolina data center. The data center, home of Apple’s iCloud will become the biggest “end-user” solar facility. In other words, Apple’s new solar energy will be the biggest system built by the user FOR the user. Here are some other facts about Apple’s new solar project:

  • The project has been granted the highest honor from the Green Building Council: The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
  • A chilled water system will reuse rainwater to more efficiently cool the building.
  • The project will include a white “cool-roof” design to ensure maximum solar reflectivity.
